Radhanath Swami on “Shelter of the holy names in a scandalous age of controversies ”

Radhanath Swami ChantingSri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has instructed us that of all the different Vedic ritualistic instructions, of all the great mantras in the Vedas, and of all the teachings of the great sadhus, there is one verse which is the most important and pertinent to all those aspiring for perfection. He explained that every devotee should take this one verse, put it on a golden necklace and wear it around his neck at all times. What is that verse?

  trnad api sunicena

taro iva sahishnuna

amanina manadena

kirtaniya sada hari

One should be more humble than a blade of grass, one should be more tolerant than a tree, and one should offer all respects to others, expecting nothing in return. Only in this way can one chant the holy name of the Lord constantly.

In our chanting of the holy names we should be very attentive. We should chant the holy names for one purpose only – to please Krishna. Whatever else we do, whatever else we say, it will have real potency only to the extent we are sincerely taking to the chanting of the holy names. So this should not be minimized for anything else. This is the basis and essence of all of our advancement.

While chanting our japa or while chanting and dancing in kirtan we should be chanting in a humble mood of worshipping the Supreme Personality of Godhead in his most magnificent incarnation of Harinaam. It is explained “Kali kale Naam rupe Krishna Avatar”: in this age of scandals and controversies which the scriptures call Kali yuga, the Supreme Lord incarnates with all of his powers and all of his opulence in the sound vibration of the holy names. So we must approach the holy name as Krishna himself and with great attention and devotion chant. Whatever our qualifications or disqualifications may be in any type of devotional service, Krishna recognizes our sincere endeavor to work very hard according to our capacity. And he also recognizes us when we work very hard on hearing and chanting the supreme name of the Lord.
