Approaching the Holy Names

Maha Mantra

When we call upon Krishna’s names, it is the most accessible and powerful way of remembering Krishna, especially if we are attentive.

Krishna tells us in Gita that he reveals himself to us according to the sincerity of our surrender. In the same way, according to the sincerity in which we call out or cry out Krishna’s names, Krishna will reveal himself. He is always non different from his holy names, but he reveals himself according to our sincere devotion.

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was seeing Krishna everywhere, he was seeing Vrindavan everywhere, because he was seeking Krishna everywhere. The Bible says, “Seek and you shall find.” If we are seeking sense gratification, if we are seeking ways of satisfying our ego, we will find so many facilities for that purpose. If we are seeking the opportunity to serve Krishna, to love Krishna, Krishna will reveal himself to us in every situation.

Bhakti Siddhanta Sarasvati Thakur, a great spiritual leader and our param guru said, “Do not try to see Krishna. Serve Krishna in such a way that Krishna will be pleased to see you.” This is how we should come before the deity in the temple, this is the spirit in which we should chant the holy names, in japa, in bhajan, in kirtan.
